Saul can control dreams, not just his dreams but dreams of people he comes in contact.  At first, he is not aware of what he can do and does not understand why people act strangely when he gets angry.  When he goes away to boarding school he inadvertently calls for help from his Spirit Guide.
His Spirit Guide teaches Saul about his gift and alerts him about danger from the Man who wants the gift.  His paranoid warnings turn out to be true when the Man finds Saul after he is finished with school.  Had Saul listened, then the nightmares that the Man creates for his own pleasure and gain would not have happened.  To end the nightmares, Saul must solve a poorly written “riddle” before it’s too late.

#HomeANovel Query Letter

After pondering this since my first novel, I’ve decided to give a Literary Agent a try. Below, is the letter I’ve put together. Please let me know your constructive criticism.

When Cody returns home to rescue his brother from a malevolent force, he is seduced by the darkness plaguing his hometown, and learns he has the power to stop the end of the world.

Home: A Novel is a 102309 word dark fantasy with biblical influences. Based upon your interest in horror, I thought you might enjoy reading and representing Home: A Novel for publication.

The man hiding behind the glaring windows of the Shanley Hotel wants to restore the small, lackluster town, Shoshoni, WY, to what it had been in years past. But, his motives are not what brothers, Cody and Tyler, expect. First Tyler is drawn back to their hometown, and unwittingly agrees to begin work on rebuilding the block where the Shanley stands.

Cody doesn’t return home as easily, and bizarre things begin happening; unexplained sounds, bruises and scratches, and a mysterious tattoo. When he wakes, naked, in a motel room with a strange woman, she alerts him of the dangers if he returns home.

Without heeding her warnings, he goes back with the goal of rescuing his brother. However, the man in the hotel seduces Cody into believing he is helping him return into God’s graces. In the shadowy basement of the Shanley Hotel a beast is born, but will it bring the end of the world?

I have self-published five novels. I grew up in Shoshoni, WY, but I currently live in the Denver area.

Thank you for reading the below pages of Home: A Novel. I hope you enjoy. The full manuscript is available upon request. I look forward to hearing from you.

#HomeTheNovel Cover Change

As you’ll remember from other posts, this is what I had decided on for the cover. After some thought about the cover. I’ve decided to give something else a try.

I’ve looked at covers from posts from Tribemates on Triberr, and while they are erotica books, I wonder, does it matter? I scoured Shutterstock for the perfect picture that conveys the lead character in Home, Cody.

Cody is tall, well-built with dark hair. Working as a Marketing Executive was something he decided to do when he was in college; he isn’t 100% happy with the choice, but it affords him the luxuries of life. When he speaks to his brother, Tyler (who is already Home), he agrees to meet him there to see what the plans are to rebuild the town where they grew up. If you know about Wyoming, you know that it mostly dry plains.

It’s interesting how both work for Home, and how both are completely different in concept. The original cover speak to the dark and strange side of the story, while the new cover speaks to the erotic side of it.

What do you think? Should I stick with the original or go with the new concept?

More about Home: A small Wyoming town is shrinking and dying away. Some people don’t care what happens to this small town, but one person does and he wants it restored. He is no ordinary man, he’s seen the town rise and fall since its beginning. But he can’t do it alone, he needs the help of the boy who knew him without ever meeting him; the one who would rebuild the town for him and restore his ties to Heaven.

Richard or Rooster?: The Male Anatomy Dilemma #HomeTheNovel

While writing Home, I’ve come to a dilemma, what word do I use for male genitalia. I know that seems like a no brainer, but it’s surprising how one word can change the feeling/mood of a scene. My first thought was to always to use penis as it is the proper term for the item in question. But that seems so clinical, and Home is anything but clinical. So I moved onto slang, dick or cock; junk didn’t even get a second glance, too derogatory for something so functional and vital in the world.

Does one make more of a statement than the other? Is one more offensive or pornographic than the other? Then there’s the voice in the back of my head (the prude), saying ‘do you have to use either?’ and some out there would probably agree with my inner prude. Suddenly, I have an argument going on with all these different people in my head; one says ‘cock’, one says ‘dick’, and the third says ‘don’t say either, don’t write these things.’ Sorry, number three, you loose since sex is an important topic with who and what some of the characters are.

Here’s an example from Home:

“Welcome,” the voice from the phone said as the cerulean blue hue dissipated, showing them a plain, old hotel room. “Oh,” he said. The blue streams from his eyes moved to them quickly, unsure why they were in his presence. “I wasn’t expecting you, Tyler. And you brought a friend.” More ejaculate streamed from Tyler’s engorged penis. “Good to see you too.” The man smiled.

“Shit,” Jen whispered. “Tyler? Who is this?” She covered her breasts with her arm. “Where are we?”

Tyler blushed, feeling another surge ready to explode from his balls. “Mr. Bel.” He groaned and crumpled to the floor.

The man stared down at Tyler as Jen squat next to him.

“Tyler?” she said, anxiously patting his cheek. “You’re burning up.”

“I have that effect on some people,” he said, still staring at Tyler, wondering why he was there. Clearly, Mark had made a mess of things.

Tyler sat up, breathing heavily. He moaned, and his body convulsed, followed by a dribble of semen from his cock. Jen stared up at the man standing over them. For some reason she wasn’t frightened of him. Part of her mind told her that she was in an extremely dangerous position. That anything she did would be met with violence. But as she looked into the beautiful face, she couldn’t find any cause for alarm. The man snapped his fingers at his side, and the door opened.

In this scene, yes, I used both penis and cock, but should I change either to dick? I know I’m probably questioning this for no reason. All this is writer preference, and I should use the word that I like better. So I’m back to the beginning. Oh wait, what about manhood?

He stared blankly at Darrin for a moment, then disappeared in a cloud of smoke. He stood outside the trailer, foil drawn, trying to understand what Magician was talking about. He did not hear her approach. She glanced into High Priestess’s trailer and saw that no one was there, a dreamy expression took control of her face.

“Oh my, are we being attacked?” she asked. He turned his head to see Bearded Lady, swirling wine in her glass, the soft hair of her beard nestled into the cleft of her breasts. She smiled. “Since we’re here, together, you can defend me.”

“I need a strong man to keep the bad away.”

She ran her finger down the center of his chest. His body prickled with intrigue at the insinuated offer. She sipped the wine and put the glass near his mouth. He opened his mouth and she carefully tilted the glass back, filling his mouth with the acidic liquid.

“Not too much, my sweets,” she said. “You haven’t found harmony in the world yet.” She smiled and looked into his eyes. “You are getting there, though.”

“I need to be going.”

“So soon? There’s so much you…” she paused and watched the wine swirl in her glass. “We aren’t the enemy, you know.” His brow furrowed considering her statement. “You know where to find me.”

He watched her walk into the shadows; she intrigued him so much. Her mere existence was a giant puzzle he wanted to solve.

“Before you go,” Devil said, coming up beside him. “We need to chat.”

“I don‘t think we do. When she’s Mary, she’s off limits to you.”

“She’s always the same to me, how am I to know the difference?”

“Don’t play dumb, you know the difference.” Darrin said as Devil stroked his black goatee. “This is just another of your games. You always know when a replacement arrives.”

“You outwit me, Knight,” he chuckled. “Is this why you stay flipped? So you can be smart? Don’t you like your bestial side anymore? Slash first ask questions never; the way we normally enjoy you. And trust me, we enjoy you.”

“And we always enjoy the way you tempt us with the fruit forbidden.”

“No one does anything they do not want to do, least of all High Priestess. She is free to deny herself my pleasures and believe me, she has.”

“Poor you.”

“I wouldn’t go that far, she’s not the only one out there. I attract all kinds.” Devil winked. “I mean I never said I was destitute, quite the opposite.” Darrin’s cheeks burned. “What’s a little passion between friends?” He put his hand on Darrin’s shoulder and rubbed and squeezed down his arm and continued speaking. “Nothing wrong with any exchange, I’m just being friendly.” He took a deep breath and exhaled with a low moan. Darrin felt himself become tingly and lightheaded. “It’s only fun, nothing wrong with fun. Isn’t that the most important thing? Fun?” Devil purred. “We could have fun. I know we could. Just you and me.”

“Yeah,” Darrin replied without realizing it. “Fun.”

“Now you’re seeing it from my point of view.”

CIRCUS TAROT amzn.to/M514ix #ReviewsWanted

“What are you doing out here, Knight?” A voice hissed in front of Darrin in the fading evening light.

He looked up—the red and white cloth in his hand—at a Clown with orange and green hair, wearing a puffy purple shirt and black and white wide striped pants. Darrin assumed the reason for the hissing sound, the Clown made when he spoke, was due to the pointy teeth in his mouth. He held a bucket in his left hand.

“Have you gone deaf, Knight?” the Clown snapped.

“Sorry,” he replied and stuffed the cloth into his jacket pocket. “I didn’t…”

“Didn’t what? Didn’t know that you are in Clown Wood without permission?”

“In what?” he answered looking around at his surroundings.

“In what, indeed?” the Clown became more agitated. He put the bucket down and approached. Saliva started dripping from his mouth. He stood face to face with Darrin. His breath smelled of rotten eggs and sauerkraut. “I could rip your throat out with my teeth for this trespass,” he hissed. “You know the rules.”

Darrin pulled the foil from his belt not yet raising it and said. “Where is Mary, Ace?”

The Clown squinted. “She definitely is not out here, Knight.” He spat emphasizing Knight. He hissed and moved his soft-overstuffed belly into Darrin. “Don’t you think you should be moving on?”
Darrin stared hard into the Clown’s eyes. He saw only darkness in them, no color from the iris, just black. He held tightly to his foil, intent on defending himself if he needed, but still did not back away.
